Early 20th Century

Old Spanish coins were melted and beaten to produce the most distinctive of the Mandaya woman’s accessories, the platena. The silver discs are incised with geometric designs that are also seen on the weavings of the Mandaya women. Such breastplates were worn singly, or if the wearer was of great wealth, as full assemblages, on strings of beads and alligator teeth.
