The Tingguian are known for their weaving of large, vari-patterned blankets. The rarest object in their material culture is the akusan of shaman’s belt. It is actually, more a pouch than a belt, the pouch holding magic substances, and closed by large, very old ivory and bone pieces traded from the celebes. This particular example has seven ivory beads, three which have age cracks, five large bone beads as well as wood and shell closures. The textile pouch is very old and has the distinctive mata-mata (diamond) patterning in faded reds and blues.
