This striking santo is a fine example of the Santo de Bastidor, a type of santo that was made to be wigged and dressed. The lower portion of the bust has notches where wooden supports would have been fitted to form a hoop skirt. The large bust is in very fine condition except for age cracks and a discoloration of the ivory on the left side of the nose. It still bears traces of paint around the ears. The hands have the long tapering fingers so characteristic of genuine ivory carving of the late 19th century. The Virgin’s lips are half open to reveal her teeth. Most likely, this fine head would have been the product of a provincial workshop. The style is too robust and powerful, and does not conform to the hyper-refined style of Manila gremio’s of the period.
