holy familySOLDht: Male and Female Figures: 35 cms. |
A very fine example of late 19th century refinement, this elegant grouping of santos was once clothed and wigged. The heads, feet and hands are of solid ivory, mounted on delicately carved softwood bodies. The eyes are of glass, with the lips and hair , tinted. Except for two missing fingers on the nino, there is no damage on the set, not even age lines on the ivory. The purity and condition of the ivory are due to the set having been kept under glass. The Saint Joseph cradles the baby, a convention noted in ivory holy family groupings from navotas, an old suburb of manila. An old family from that suburb once owned the piece. It was ordered, said their matriarch, from a “gremio” or workshop in Quiapo, an area particulary noted for workshops where santeros plied their trade.
