folk santo of the virgin and child HT:63 CMS |
This santo is carved in a vigorous and powerful primitive style. Such images were called ‘mamarachos’ or grotesqueries by the early friars. This particular piece makes up in originalty and sculptural power what it lacks in religious feeling. This amazing folk rendition of the ‘Theo Tokos’ or Mother of God, shows the virgin holding the christ child, her garments depicted as a series of jagged folds. Her crown is pegged on to the massive veil.
