The hornbill is a sacred totemic animal among the Ilongot. The skull and beak adorn the most famous artifact of the Ilongot, the headdress called the ‘Kalao’. The scabbard of this headhunting knife is decorated with a representation of the hornbill. The obvious association of the hornbill to this deadly weapon brings an air of magical potency to the object.
