EARLY 20th CENTURY, Ifugao

The Ifugao warrior’s most distinctive prestige item is the Ginutu belt. Shell discs carved from the giant tridacana clam are arranged on a textile backing, the largest of these being the buckle or ‘upod’. The entire ensemble consists of this belt, a buckle, and the metal machete in its open-faced wooden scabbard. When complete, this beautiful object speaks of the prestige of the warrior. Such complete ensembles are among the most-prized heirlooms of the Ifugao.
